Aging in Place Safety Shower Seating Designed With Ergonomic Principles

Both Design By Intent® disability shower seating and DecoTeak® teak shower benches have been designed with modern ergonomics in mind. With the Aging in Place movement it is important in designing shower safety furniture to consider modern ergonomics;

  • Style & Design
    • Safety
      • Function
        • Ergonomics

Aging in Place Shower Safety SeatingBoth our teak shower chairs and our new wall mounted shower chairs fuse all of these elements in to one. Now you no longer need to choose between safety & function versus beauty and design. We combined clinical research on the best height, width and arm rest positions for ergonomic function with sleek, modern styling. The result - A mix of elegance and comfort designed specifically for those who are mobility-impaired, elderly, arthritic or simply mindful of taking care of their bodies in even the simplest of ways.

Moving from standing to sitting, and sitting to standing, is one of the most common tasks we perform everyday, and usually taken for granted. However, as we get older, it is also a surprisingly physically challenging task, especially for mobility impaired, elderly, or arthritis sufferers. Significant clinical research has shown that transitioning from standing to sitting, and back, places significant stress and strain on both the hips and knees. Extensive research has shown that simple chair design concepts can greatly reduce the stress placed on the body when moving from sitting to standing positions. Providing arm rests significantly reduces this stress and strain by allowing a resting surface for both stability, increased safety, and reduction in weight bearing on the knees and legs. Research has shown that the use of arms when going from a seating to a standing position can decrease the strain on muscles, and joints and provide up to 300% increased mobility.

Handicap Shower Seating SafetyMany of the wall mounted Design By Intent® shower chairs have the option of providing arms. Mounting grab bars with reach of the chair can provide the same ergonomic benefits as arms. Design by Intent also offers grab bars that are elliptical in shape, for better gripping ergonomics. Additional grab bars have an attractive soft tactile coating which provides additional slip resistance.

lift-aide.jpgSeveral of the DecoTeak® teak shower benches and stools are designed with built in LiftAide® arms to allow customers to conveniently grip the arms as they lift themselves out of the seats. This also provides added safety in a shower environment. This will provide greater comfort, mobility, and safety not only for elderly, but for all of us. The added ease and benefits of the LiftAide® designs provide universal benefits, whether you are 82, or 23 years old.
